We aren't sure what it is with French classics and romantic isolated outcasts spying from their lairs. But unlike Hugo's Hunchback of Notre-Dame, Phantom of the Opera romantises the power of darkness. Popularised by the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, the story started life as a serial based on the true rumors surrounding a famous Paris opera house - there is actually a secret underground lake beneath said opera house! The book uses music and romance to portray an elegantly gothic Parisian setting that invites the jealous forbidden passion driving this literary classic's twists and turns.

We wanted our bookish print to capture this complex mix of elegance and gothic - the romantic and the dark.
