The Hunchback of Notre-Dame - Victor Hugo

Our The Hunchback of Notre-Dame Title Page art print inspired by Victor Hugo finds a thread of hope beneath the darkness of Hugo’s Paris.

Part of our Title Page collection, this literary print pairs words and imagery to express what the story means to us. It is our interpretation of the work, rather than a reproduction of a published book cover.

The Story Behind the Design

"Spira, Spera."

"Breathe, Hope."

Due to centuries of neglect, Notre-Dame had fallen into disrepair when Hugo wrote The Hunchback Of Notre-Dame. The novel went on to transform the cathedral into the national icon it is today and was a 'landmark' text in the broader heritage movement. Since the novel's publication, living under Notre-Dame came to define the lives of countless Parisians that passed beneath its spires.

Our art print aims to capture the original's much darker ending than later more widely known adaptations. We used gothic art showing the architecture Hugo hoped to preserve in his writing. Our chosen Hunchback of Notre-Dame quote demonstrates the need for hope against overwhelming odds also present in this classic literature.
