The Story

"I'm quite illiterate but I read a lot."

A rallying point for teenage rebellion, The Catcher in the Rye rails against the 'phony' aspects of society we are obliged to tolerate. Holden tries to 'hold on' to innocence, kindness, and spontaneity - traits he attributes to children.  A teenager may sympathise, while an adult may scoff. But a reader with experience of the world knows that for all their simplicity Holden's critiques are actually pretty accurate despite their useless contempt or unrealistic moralising depending on your perspective. It is surprisingly complex classic literature that changes its shape with the life of its reader.

Our bookish print aims to get at this more nuanced look at Holden's attitude. It isn't black or white becoming an adult does not mean becoming a phony. As Holden finds himself entering an adult world he doesn't yet recognise that, with effort, these traits he tries to hold on to can be maintained or even developed into pillars on which the world of phonies can be improved. Indeed, childhood passes, but its imprint can remain.  We should not look down on Holden's attitude but try to integrate it into an adult way of navigating the world.
