The Story
Originally, we had a complicated relationship with Sense and Sensibility. On the one hand, we admire the Dashwood sister's ability to endure and were pleased they ended the novel content with their lives. However, we feel their end to be unambitious, with Marianne's emotional depth capitulating to Elinor's good sense. Is this dose of reality that Austen gave to readers of the work. Perhaps aspiring to domestic contentedness was as much as contemporary women could hope for. Even further, we may even see merit in cooling one's desire and see the novel as contemporary critics did, as a behaviour blueprint to achieve a domestic prize. That is, if we see the finding of a husband to be the climax of the story... (we don't).
One critic writes "It is this very closeness between the sisters that allows these differences to emerge during their exchange". We read Sense and Sensibility with this closeness in mind - as two close sisters working together to maintain a sense of self which can only be fully realised in a relationship with each other due to the confines of a woman's place in Austen's world. They are the only characters capable of intelligent thought and it may be that they understood their respective marriages to be the only practical solution against the insecurity of remaining an unmarried woman. They work hard to keep their relationship together. Our bookish print draws on these complex themes of togetherness and places the sisters together in the centre of a storm, taking shelter with each other, We use vibrant but dark colours to represent a semi-hostile world. The estate both looms in the distance as an inevitability but also seems to be an objectve gazed upon by the two sisters as a means to remain together. This results in a vintage book poster perfect for readers and book lovers looking for Jane Austen gifts to curate an authentic bookish decor experience that stays true to the themes of this classic literature.
Our Jane Austen print uses dark cottagecore and feminist themes to create a bookish classic literature poster - a perfect book lovers gift for any reading corner, college apartment, or indie room decor.
