The Story

Inspired by bad gothic novels, Don Quixote, and A Female Quixote, Northanger Abbey shows how stories can get the better of their readers. Much like Don Quixote, and later, Emma Bovary, Catherine is enamored with literary fantasies and blurs the boundaries of real life and fiction without consideration for real-life consequences. Readers, do not worry, Austen also makes clear that those who are considered "good" and well-educated read novels.
