The Story
"She was the amoureuse of all the novels, the heroine of all the plays, the vague 'she' of all the poetry books."
One of the biggest killers of 19th-century literature was being an unfaithful wife. Just ask Leo Tolstoy, Kate Chopin, or Gustav Flaubert. This has little to do with the writers but more about the times they were writing. For realist authors, death seems the believable conclusion to this sort of story. Emma Bovary (the titular Madame who gains a surname derived from bovine) is just as tragic as these other literary heroines. She is a 19th-century Quixote fascinated and enthralled by the romance and adventure of books. But due to her position is unable to act on these adventurous impulses. She compares her books to the unromantic and unadventurous expectations of her existence and sets out to carve her own story rather than submit to reality. Sadly, Emma is greeted with the ugliness of a reality not yet ready for an adventurous woman. Cautionary, tragic, and often hilarious, Madame Bovary is a deep and complex literary classic well worth read today.
We wanted our bookish print to capture Emma's thirst for experience. We use a Madame Bovary quote that many book lovers can relate to. We also use an illustration from the original text of Emma looking longingly out the window in search of something outside the confining walls of expectations. This results in a vintage book poster perfect for readers and book lovers looking for literary gifts to curate an authentic bookish decor experience that stays true to the themes of this classic literature.
Our bookish art uses a feminist quote and art to channel light academia themes in the creation of a bookish feminist poster - a perfect book lovers gift for a reading corner for showcase on booktok and bookstagram!
Take Gustav Flaubert's Madame Bovary beyond the shelf with a bookish literary poster. This book cover art print adds to any home décor - a great bookish gift for the book nook of book lovers!
