The Story Behind the Design

Loosely based on the author's relationship with her own sisters, Little Women charts the coming of age of the March sisters. Despite being a classic children's book, Little Women is a deep exploration of what it means to be a woman - the tension of self-direction and expectations growing with every passing year. The book inspired generations to guard their ambitions against social arrangements whilst pulling no punches about just how difficult this is. It remains a feminist text rooted in realist traditions useful for seeing both the brightness of possibility and the weight of reality.

Our art print uses a Little Women quote expressing this realistic optimism. Importantly, this quote is said by another to comfort. One of the book's main themes is of a tight-knit sisterhood providing a rock of security for safely exploring one's interests in a tough world. Our illustration also expresses the importance of community and comfort by using art from the original work of the sisters together.
