The Story Behind the Set

Baldwin grew up drawing inspiration from the Harlem Renaissance. He saw artists who looked like him and sounded like him create art that he recognised as part of his own experience. Baldwin is one of the main inheritors of the Harlem Renaissance. He used that struggle to create visions for a better world, contributing to Civil Rights through literature, essays, and debate. Today, he is remembered as an inspiration to established and aspiring writers concerned with justice.

Our Harlem's LegacyGallery Wall Set uses Baldwin's work paired with art from the Harlem Renaissance to demonstrate the continuity between the art of the 1920s-30s and the Civil Rights movement. We chart this movement in the difficulty of breaking with the established reality of Go Tell It on the Mountain, the development of new ways of living in Another Country, and going beyond Harlem in Just Above My Head.
