The Story

The idea for Frankenstein came to Shelley while an appropriately cold volcanic winter engulfed the world. It is one of the first science fiction stories and cemented the genre as a literary staple. For instance, many critics hail it as a feminist work with a protagonist's place in the world contingent on a man who granted them their life.
