The Story
"If you want to overcome the whole world, overcome yourself"
Demons is classic Russian literature and for me, the most Dostoevsky of all Dostoevsky novels. Inspired by a newspaper story on revolutionaries, Dostoevsky creates a standard generational conflict which quickly becomes much darker. Ideas possess characters to do the unthinkable. Demons is a prophetic exploration on what it means to be motivated in the pursuit of the greater good whilst examining the reasons people do awful things. Demons presents evil with relatable motivations and a human face.
The Russian title, Bésy, translated as Demons, Possessed or Devils is beautifully vague in its ambiguity suggesting both people possessed by ideas as a supernatural force and Demons in human flesh possessing others with their ideas. Our literary print uses the more common Demons translation alongside the famous "Fallen Angel" artwork to build on the tragedy of the good intentions which often lead to possession by demons and resulting terrible action. Our chosen Dostoevsky quote reminds us to first understand our principles within ourselves before putting them out into the world. This results in a vintage book poster perfect for readers and booklovers looking for literary gifts to curate an authentic bookish decor experience that stays true to the themes of this literary classic.
Our bookish art uses a Dostoevsky quote and a classic art to channel dark academia themes in the creation of a bookish classic literature poster - a perfect bookworm gift for a reading corner for showcase on booktok and bookstagram!
