The Story
Anna Karenina is our favourite Tolstoy masterpiece. Readers grapple with Tolstoy's characters as they navigate worlds of desire, fear, shame, and love. It is a huge book with many interweaving themes.
We wanted our watercolour to express the social expectations that compel characters to act in particular ways - similar to how a train is obliged to run down its track. Because Anna deviated from her track, she was crushed under it. However, it isn't all gloom. Our bookish print also represents the first time Anna and Vronsky see each other in a crowded station. Our book poster brings both figures together as the crowd dissolves behind them. It is the oncoming train that divides them. Anna faces Vronsky while Vronsky faces the train - often caring more about what people think than Anna. We hope this print provides a reminder on your wall that the expectations of others have incredible force and sometimes there is a price to pay when discounting them entirely - such is the bittersweet straightforwardness underpinning Tolstoy's complexity!
Showcase your love for Tolstoy's Anna Karenina with this book poster. Or, treat another book lover with a bookish gift! Beyond the Shelf literary gifts are true to the story of any classic, the perfect addition to any book nook.
